Be part of the memorial tribute ot Jack Babcock .
With sadness, we must announce the passing of our most senior hero ... Jack Babcock, Canada's last World War One soldier passed away on February 18th.
Those of you who have stayed current with the Hero to Hero Troop Morale Campaign know that Jack (And his wife Dot) were huge supporters of our troops.
Jack was an amazing man who touched so many lives in his 109 years.
He was in his mid teens when he joined the Canadian military and ended up overseas, but being caught for being too young he was not allowed to fight. To the end he maintained that he was no hero because he never fought. We often referred to him as the humble or reluctant hero.
Jack is a fascinating study. It's amazing to realize that Queen Victoria was on the throne when he was born. Then think about him watching the Wright Brothers flying at a fair. Or getting his high school equivalency - in his 90's!
Teachers/parents looking for a great history lesson for the kids, here's your guy!
And don't think this is all about Canada. Jack was a proud dual citizen of both of our countries AND served in both of our armies! He was born in Sydenham, Ontario, Canada but settled down here in Washington - Spokane, to be specific.
He remained spry to the end and had the most beautiful head of white hair any man could want ... even if that man was decades younger!
He was married twice for a total of more than 80 of his 109 years. He had an incredible wit, and the best sense of humor, in fact he would often laugh at his own jokes as he told them. Listening to him recount his past and all of his memories was fascinating!
We were so fortunate to have not only met him, but been allowed to video tape many of our visits. You can find some of the moments we caught on utube. And you can see a great story on him on utube via a History Channel session in 3 parts.
For the record ... There are now only two remaining veterans from WWI - Frank Buckles/USA & Claude Choules/UK
We ask you to send a message for Jack and his family. We will be sharing your tributes with Jack's wife, Dot.
